Messi Says His Favorite Goal Was Against Man Utd.
Can he repeat it?
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has scored all types of stunning goals in his epic career but his header in the 2009 Champions League final against Manchester United remains one of his favorites.
The goal—his first against an English club—secured a 2–0 victory and saw Barça earn the historic treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League.
“It was hard to imagine that I was going to score with my head with [Rio] Ferdinand standing near me, but I didn’t really have a marker—the ball came into the center and I was there to meet it,” Messi said.
“In the moments that the ball was in the air from Xavi’s cross, I pictured scoring this goal and I thank God it happened.
“It was such an important goal in every sense: for the team, for the way the final was turning in our favor and for me, too. It’s still one of my favorite goals.
“After missing the 2006 final through injury, it was very special for me just to play in this game, let alone score in it. It completed a great season when we won everything.”
Barcelona is set to face Man Utd. at Old Trafford on April 10. Messi is in sensational form after Barça’s 2–0 win over Atlético Madrid on Saturday: he has scored 13 goals and set up another four in his last 10 games.
So will he deliver another stunner on Wednesday? We’ll just have to wait and see…
But what do you think?
